Well, we leave for a week in Portland one week from today. My big sister is getting MARRIED! yay! We'll fly in Wednesday night, have a bridal shower on Thursday, Bachelorette Party on Friday, rehearsal on Saturday, Wedding on Sunday, recover on Monday and fly back to Providence on Tuesday! Whew!
Anyway, things have been BUSY here! The weather keeps going back and forth between rain and sun . . . I am really just hoping for nice spring weather - we haven't really even had spring yet and it is June! It was nice today, but is supposed to rain all the rest of the week.
On a recent sunny day, Jon, our friend Todd and I rode our bikes out on the East Bay Bike Path. This bike path goes along the bay for at least 13 miles and I believe it ends at Colt State Park in Bristol - the beach! We probably only rode about 3 miles, but it was beautiful! We plan to ride it all the way to the beach some day.
Our garden is coming a long nicely! We have rosemary, tomatoes, basil, oregano, lettuce, beets, shallots, zucchini, dill, leeks, etc. It looks better than the picture below, I just don't have a recent photo. Last night, we ate lettuce, Shallots and basil in our dinner all from the garden! It's been fun being a part of the community garden . . . all the plots are so beautiful and it's fun to share excess produce with other people in the garden, to watch the bees buzz around their house and flit from plant to plant, to turn the compost and use it to mulch the beds, to fill up watering can after watering can and watch our garden grow. love it!
I've been really in to printmaking lately. Below is a photo of a print I am working on that is carved from a block of wood. This was supposed to be a wedding gift over a year ago, but the project has been elusive. When I discovered printmaking, I think I finally found the medium I needed to get it done. Since making this print, I've churned out a few more prints in linocut and have a few more in mind already! Feels good to be creative again!
We have to leave hudson with friends while we are gone next week . . . I am a bit nervous since he has reactive attachment disorder :) But these friends have watched him before and he's gotten so much better at walking on the leash, etc since then . . . I'm sure he'll be fine - I guess it's just me I am worried about. Last week, we dogsat our friend's rodesian ridgeback, Calvin. Hudson and Calvin are great friends. We would take hudson over there almost every day and they would run around the yard together. Calvin was sad that his family wasn't there with him, but he sure was happy to see us and to let Hudson chase him around the yard!
Friends! We've really been solidifying a good group of friends here these past few months. It feels great to go around the city and recognize faces and places. Providence is such a small town, it is impossible now to go anywhere without running in to someone we know. Here we are with some awesome friends a few weeks ago at a birthday bbq~ that day we were invited to 3 bbqs in one day! That's how well we are doing with meeting people. This is probably one of the reasons why I don't blog as often as I used to . . . i actually have a life now. I guess it is a good problem.
anyway, we ordered pizza and need to go water the garden and then I am going to color my hair in prep for the wedding photos! Just wanted to check in real quick to let you know that we are happy and healthy and keeping busy! See some of you very soon!
I know it's been a while - we've had a lot of computer problems lately, stupid viruses - . . . so I thought I'd do a photo update . . . . Here goes:
This past weekend, two of our housemate's graduated from RISD (Rhode Island School of Design). Matt, who lives in our apt and Jeff who lives one floor below us both received their master's degrees. We cheered them on in the morning and then celebrated by stuffing our faces at a bbq in back of our building afterwards. The weekend was full of meeting families and celebrating. Teegan, Jeff's wife, even had a piano recital scheduled for the same weekend so her family could check out her amazing talents while they were all in town already. What a great time for supporting our friends and eating lots of good food. (did I mention that I love good food?)
Here's a photo of the four of us housemates (matt, me, Jon, and Lisa) taken at the bbq. (Lisa left us for the summer and we have someone else living in her room for three months. we miss her!!!) Waaaay back in the beginning of May, my friend Joanna and I co-hosted a clothing swap/Mad Hatter Tea Party. It was divine. Joanna really did all the work I just came up with part of the idea . . . About 15 or more girls atteneded, bringing bags and bags of clothes they wanted to get rid of (spring cleaning!) we had tea and lovely desserts, playe "Alice in Wonderland" in the background, sorted through each other's clothes, took what we wanted and Donated the rest to the Rhode Island Women's Shelter. I already have 5 more bags of clothes to get rid of for the next time we do it!
Here's just a cute picture of hudson from when he wedged himself in to the small space where Jon was working to fix his office chair. Hudson missed Jon while he was away at school . . . can you tell? Of all the places he could lay in the ENTIRE house, he picked this one: Here's a photo of the banditos from the end of March when we visited our friends Abby and Dylan in their new home in Asheville, NC. These are our friends that we lived with last summer in Alaska. Hudson and Jack (the blue heeler) are BFFs . . . so we all had a GREAT time! Here's the crew of us on our hike up a Mountain which I forget the name of . . . bald mountain maybe? dunno. It was wonderful whatever it was called. Lately, we've been working hard, playing in the smatterings of sun we get every now and then, tending to our plot in the community garden, spending time bbqing with friends and hanging at the beach . . . we've seen some family recently (when our cousin Emily graduated with her Master's Degree in Boston) . . . we are watering our first floor neighbor's flowers while they are in Wisconson getting hitched (sadly, we couldn't afford plane tickets to their wedding . . . sniffle) . . . Last night we went and saw the new Star Trek movie and LOVED IT! . . . Jon is playing intramural softball with Brown for the summer (Tabitha just watches), Hudson is making friends with other dogs around town and we are looking forward to a trip home to Oregon in a few weeks for Sara and Pete's wedding! huzzah!
oh and also? we found DROP TOP AMBER ALE from Portland, Oregon at the liquor store across the street!!! Finally! Beer that tastes like it should! sigh . . .
so, the weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer . . . in fact, yesterday was my only day off this week and i wanted to sleep in. but since the sun is coming up before 6 am it was so bright in my room that i actually had to close the curtains!
today it was supposed to be near 80. it was gorgeous. i worked all day inside. no one came to the cafe to eat . . . it was slow . . . everyone was outside in the sun! so that's awesome for them, but a bit poopie for me because i need the cash to get plane tickets to fly home for my sister, sara's, wedding.
so, i've been working a ton - 5 days at the cafe this week! and i've been doing massage every thursday all month. i love it! today i printed off some of my photos to frame and put up in the room. the room needs a bit of help in the decoration department. i'm trying to decide what sort of feel i want to invoke and how to do it cheaply. i have to do it in stages since i don't have a ton of money right now. so, printing off pictures was a great idea! 19 cents each! put them in some frames i got at the craft store (on sale!) and you've got decorations for under $10!
jon is officially headed in to "reading week" which is the week before finals here at brown. after finals week, jon will be done with classes. forever. hard to believe since he's been taking classes as long as i've known him. now he will only be doing research, writing and teaching . . . for 2-3 more years. but no more classes. ever. this is a mile marker. wow.
our roommate got engaged! yay! he and his lady-friend will be getting married at the end of the summer. so we are on the lookout for a new roomie . . . any one interested in moving out to providence for a while? hm? sounds fun, doesn't it? come hang out with us! we are good cooks and killer board game players!
tonight, tabitha (me) is going to an art opening at the non-profit she volunteers with (west side arts). it is called "the art of war" and will feature paintings from a local artist who served in wwII. we will have live jazz and food and drinks . . . fun fun fun!
this week, jon and i also went to a rally at the state house speaking out against human trafficking for the sex trade industry right here in our tiny state. i also said goodbye to the little girl i watch as she and her mum went to spain for a month. jon went to the farmer's market today and bought a little organic basil starter plant. we are excited to start growing some food soon! our friends offered to let us garden at their house this spring/summer - we are looking forward to that! and jon helped the HGSA (history grad student association) host a conference here at brown. he was a moderator for one of the panels and got a lot of good feedback. my part of the conference? schmoozing with people at the after party. nice.
so, a few weeks ago (ok almost a month ago) my sister deborah came to visit us. she stayed for half of her spring break and i think i may have run her ragged. we spent a day in boston with our cousin emily, ate way too much food every where we went, drove out to the atlantic ocean (at beavertail state park just south of jamestown, ri), and explored providence. she met a lot of our friends here, our roommates, saw where we live and work and where jon goes to school. hudson was ECSTATIC to have her here - he just lit up every time she came in the room and followed her around wagging not just his tail, but his entire body.
we had a great time. i tried to convince her to find a job and a a summer internship here and live with us this summer. it would have been a blast to have her around! we miss our family and friends and would LOVE to share our east coast lives with them from time to time . . . hint hint . . . but it looks like she'll be headed back to alaska instead. lucky girl. i hope she gives those whales a big kiss for me! i loved those whales.
anyway, it was just really nice to have her here . . . you can see more photos of her visit if you click here. check em out and let me know how happy you are that we had so much fun!
(aren't you glad i actually wrote a blog? sorry if it is boring . . .)
one thing we learned on our road trip down south was that hudson does GREAT on road trips. he loves being the car, he loves going new places. as long as he is with us, he knows he's gonna be just fine. the minute he felt like we might be leaving him behind, he would freak a little. but we never had a problem with him being bored or misbehaving in the car. he's just a great travelin' dog.
here's a photo of him chillaxin' in tennessee . . . just at the edge of the blue ridge mountains.
